Definition of Macrobiotic
The Merriam-Webster On Line Dictionary’s definition of macrobiotic is “being a diet based on the Chinese cosmological principles of yin and yang that consists of whole cereals and grains supplemented especially with beans and vegetables and that in its especially former more restrictive forms has been linked to nutritional deficiencies”.
In layman’s terms, a macrobiotic diet consists of a combination of food groups, which when combined, creates the proper balance of nutrition essential to health.
Macrobiotic Diet – Early History
The macrobiotic diet has been around for generations and goes as far back to the 1920′s. During that period, a Japanese educator named George Ohsawa discovered that consuming the proper combination of food groups, and adapting a positive attitude for life, the body, mind and spirit could all live in perfect harmony. By following this principal, Ohsawa believed this lifestyle change would result in a happy and healthy individual.
What is Yin and Yang?
According to Chinese philosophy, every individual has 2 opposing components which must be present in the body to create a balanced harmony. These 2 opposing components are called Yin and Yang. Yin relates to all passive aspects whilst Yang relates to all aggressive aspects. The following are examples of yin and yang and how they counteract:-

Although yin and yang are different in nature, both forces co-exist to create a natural balance which is essential to everyday living.
